with a few one lane tunnels.
Each tunnel was designed to frame the four faces of Mt. Rushmore in a distance. If I had a better camera, I might have been able to capture it. After the tunnels were built a road was designed to connect the tunnels. The road was completed in 1933 with corkscrew spirals that are known as pigtail bridges.
In one of the curves, we came across these wild donkeys or burrows. They were very friendly and allowed you to pet them. The little baby was a pistol. You can see him on the right biting at his mama. He just would not leave her alone.
He also had way more energy than the others as he ran around causing havoc.
As we went thru the little town of Custer, it was like a small Sturgis.
I think every town within 100 miles is having their own Sturgis.
On the way back home, we could see Crazy Horse Memorial.

The 1948 dedication blast took off just 10 tons! Millions of tons have been removed since. It is the world’s largest carving in progress. The total height is 563 feet, with the head at 87 ½ ft., hand-built feather 44 ft, arm 263 ft., hand 33 ft, horse’s head 219 ft, and mane 62 feet. Workers are blocking out the 22 story high horse’s head now. I don’t think this carving will be finished in our lifetime….
